THE SHORT VERSION

Connecting private content to Search is optional. Review connected apps, saved Search history and personalization separately; disconnecting an app does not erase history already saved.

The change worth understanding

Google added an October 16, 2026 clarification to its older privacy promises: people who choose to connect content apps such as Gmail or Photos to other Google services may have some derived information used for advertising, depending on their settings. This is a recent policy clarification, not a new announcement today or evidence that every Gmail account has automatically opted in.

The practical question is whether more tailored answers are worth sharing additional context. A search service that can draw on your reservations may save time, but an email mailbox can contain much more than travel plans. Read the connection prompt as a data-use decision, not merely a shortcut.

What connecting an app permits

Google’s current Search help page says connected content can personalize AI Mode and other Search services. It distinguishes the underlying inbox or photo library from summaries, excerpts and inferences used to answer questions. Those derived details can be used for model training, limited human review and ads. A short, relevant email can itself constitute the summary.

Google says advertisers do not receive access to your inbox or Photos library, and describes steps to reduce personal information before training or review. These are the provider’s stated practices, not an independent privacy audit. Its guidance also warns against connecting content containing confidential information you would not want reviewed or used for training.

You can use AI Mode without connecting these apps. Disconnecting a content app does not delete information already saved in Search Services History; managing that history is a separate step.

Three controls to review

First, review which content apps are connected in Search personalization settings. Second, inspect Search Services History and decide whether to keep it, turn it off or delete existing activity. Third, review Personalized Recommendations rather than assuming that disabling one control changes all the others.

Google is gradually introducing these settings, so your account may still show Web & App Activity instead. Its documentation says the new controls initially reflect earlier choices. Google also says future activity will not train its generative models when Search Services History is off, unless you submit feedback. These Search controls do not cover every separate Google product, including Gemini Apps or YouTube.

Our practical recommendation is to connect only content you are comfortable using for the documented purposes. Keep confidential work material separate and follow your employer’s rules. This guide uses public documentation, not access to any reader’s account, and makes no changes to your settings.
